(formerly KN8EAB, 1957) I remember asking my Dad what those red letters (W8VII) on the rear window of a neighbor’s car meant.  Dad said he didn’t know, and that I should ask the neighbor.  Bill Fearnley (our neighbor) was a professional musician and played piano at The Greenbrier resort hotel…

In 1975 my family was on the 11 meter (CB) band and we met Karl (WB9UQL) who became my elmer and taught me the theory and morse code.  Karl was an electrical engineer for a local company and was active on the hf bands as well as CB.  I took and passed the novice test shortly thereafter and received the novice call of WN9VMR. That was 35 years ago and at the ripe old age of 48 I have been a ham op for many years.  I have seen the hobby change drastically and evolve into what it is today.

Wow, looking back at my first station compared to today is mind boggling.  My first station consisted of a Knight T150a transmitter and an Allied 2516 receiver all tied into a homebrew dipole in the attic.  Selectivity was horrible on the receiver, yet I managed to make contacts all over the world on cw (which still is my favorite mode of communication).  I upgraded to General a year later and received the call of WB9VMR which is the call I kept for many years.  Not to long ago I thought I should try and get my old call back, through the vanity callsign system.. I was pleasantly surprised when the new (old) callsign was in my mailbox.  I am very proud of my call and I am happy to have it back. Today I am active on hf and vhf and still enjoy the hobby as much as I did as a teenager.
